Les lièvres m'ont raconté…

Nous en avions assez d'être traqués par les chiens et les hommes, et de vivre constamment dans la peur.

Alors, nous avons décidé de courir aussi vite que possible et de sauter dans le lac pour en finir.

Mais arrivés au bord de l'eau, nous avons trouvé une bande de grenouilles complètement terrifiées… par nous!

Alors, nous nous sommes dit que ce n'était peut-être pas si grave s'il y en avait d'autres encore plus malheureux que nous!

 

The hares told me…

We were sick and tired of being hunted by dogs and men and always terrified by some kind of danger.

So we decided to run as fast as we could and jump in the lake to end it all.

But when we got to the water’s edge, a bunch of frogs were completely scared out of their minds… by us!

So we figured things aren’t so bad if there are others even more miserable than us!

Le corbeau m'a dit…

L'autre jour, je me pavanais sur la plage quand je suis tombé sur un vrai régal : une moule bien juteuse!

Sauf que je n'arrivais pas à ouvrir la coquille.

Un autre corbeau est arrivé et m'a dit : « Pourquoi ne pas prendre la moule, t’envoler très haut, et ensuite la laisser tomber sur les rochers ? Ça devrait marcher. »

J'ai suivi son conseil et, comme prévu, la coquille a heurté un rocher et s'est ouverte en grand à côté de l'autre corbeau qui attendait pour s'emparer de la moule et filer au loin! Je me suis fait avoir!

 

The crow told me…

I’m strutting my stuff down on the beach the other day when I came upon a tasty treat, a juicy mussel!

Except I can’t break open the shell.

This other crow drops in and says, “Why don’t you fly up really high with the mussel and drop it onto the rocks. That’ll do the trick.”

I take that advice and, sure enough, the shell hits a rock and cracks wide open, where the other crow was waiting to grab the mussel and scram! I was had!

Le chien m'a dit…

« Alors, je traversais un pont, tu vois? J'avais un bel os dans ma gueule quand j'ai aperçu un autre chien dans l'eau, qui me regardait.

Eh bien, lui aussi avait un os, tu vois? Je lui ai grogné dessus et il m'a grogné dessus, tu vois?

Ce salaud essayait de voler mon os! Alors j'ai commencé à aboyer et là, tu vois, mon os m'a échappé et a coulé au fond de la rivière. J'ai failli sauter sur l'autre chien, mais son os avait disparu lui aussi! Bien fait pour lui, ce crétin, d'avoir essayé de me voler mon déjeuner! »

 

The dog told me…

“So I’m crossing this bridge, see? And I’ve got this yummy bone in my mouth, when I see this other dog, in the water, looking up at me.

Well, that dog has got a bone too, see? And I growl at him and he growls at me, see?

That cur is trying to steal my bone! So I start barking and then, see, my bone just falls out of my big yap and sinks to the bottom of the river. I almost jumped at the other dog, but his bone is gone too! Serves the jerk right for trying to steal my lunch!”

La souris des champs m'a dit…

« Mon séjour en ville m'a beaucoup perturbé. Tous ces gens, ces chiens, ces chats, et tant de dangers à chaque coin de rue. C'est un endroit correct à visiter, on y mange très bien, mais je n'y vivrais (ni n'y mourrais!) pour rien au monde. »

 

The country mouse told me…

“My time in the city left me very rattled. All those people and dogs and cats and so much danger around every corner. Nice place to visit, there was lots of great food, but I wouldn’t want to live (or die!) there.”

«Quand j'ai vu ce corbeau avec un morceau appétissant dans le bec, j'ai su qu'un peu de flatterie suffirait à ce pauvre imbécile d'ouvrir sa grande gueule et de m'offrir un déjeuner gratuit.»

 

The fox told me…

“When I saw that crow with a tasty morsel in its beak, I knew just a little flattery would be enough to get that sucker to open his big mouth and provide me with a free lunch.”

Le coq m’a dit…

« En picorant pour mon petit-déjeuner dans la basse-cour, j’ai trouvé ce bijou.

Un bibelot inutile.

Un grain de maïs ou un gros ver de terre aurait été un vrai trésor pour moi. »

 

The rooster told me…

“While pecking around for breakfast in the barnyard I found this jewel.

Useless trinket.

A kernel of corn or a fat worm would’ve been a real treasure for me.”
